The Monster Under the Bed

In the darkened room things seemed to move and change their shapes. An afghan tossed across an armchair became a komodo dragon clinging to the side of a cliff. The record player on her pink dresser was now a man from outer-space, the antennae poking out of his helmet now transmitting back to his home planet. Oh, the curtains! Look how they move, and blow! Surely, there has to be a monster behind them. But worst of all, in the creature department, was the one her older brother kept telling her about: the green man under the bed, with sharp, pointy teeth to bite of little girl’s toes. Of course this could only happen if the little girl let her foot dangle over the edge of the bed…

Oh my, the terrible fears big brothers put in little sister’s heads. There was the “under the bed monster”, the terrible “spider family”, as well as a raft of other scary night-time stories with things that jumped out of corners, or out from behind doors. I wonder if he knows that I still curl my toes up tight in bed late at night!A Search for Sue 004
